How Much Does It Cost to Start a Prop Firm?
The answer depends less on one setup fee than on the commercial model behind your entire stack. A realistic budget needs to separate one-time launch costs, fixed monthly costs and variable costs that grow with revenue, traders or accounts.
Cost categories to model
| Category | Typical charging model | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Core prop software | Setup + monthly, revenue share, per-account or hybrid | Minimums, modules, migration and scaling tiers |
| Trading platform | License, account, volume or bundled | What is included versus separately contracted |
| CRM/dashboard | Monthly, usage or bundled | Affiliate, support and automation features |
| KYC/AML | Per verification / usage | Country coverage and re-check costs |
| Payments | Transaction percentage + fixed fees | Chargebacks, reserves, refunds and country restrictions |
| Risk/data | Monthly, account or volume based | Market data, exposure analytics and add-ons |
| Legal/compliance | Project + ongoing advice | Jurisdictions, terms, marketing and corporate structure |
| Support/operations | Payroll or outsourced service | Coverage hours, languages and escalation |
Why headline pricing can mislead
Two providers with similar onboarding fees can create very different 12-month costs. A revenue-share model may lower upfront cash requirements but become more expensive as sales grow. A flat-fee model can be expensive early but more predictable at scale. Per-account models can be attractive until account volume rises sharply.
Build three scenarios
Before signing, create low, base and high-volume scenarios. For each, calculate setup fees, minimum monthly commitments, revenue share, per-account charges, payment fees, KYC usage, platform costs and paid add-ons. Include a migration/exit reserve rather than assuming the first stack will remain permanent.
Do not forget working capital
Technology is only one part of the launch budget. Your model also needs room for customer support, refunds, chargebacks, marketing, professional advice, vendor deposits or reserves and unexpected operational delays.
